Climb Up OKC at the silos in downtown Oklahoma City has taken the extraordinary step of installing a geothermal climate control system to improve the overall comfort and environment for climbers and visitors. The system is being installed by Comfort Works, an industry leading expert in geothermal solutions. The system is expected to be complete in January 2017.
Making the silos climate controlled has always been at the top of our list in terms of improvements. The interior climate is one of the top comments we get at the silos and it's been something that, since the early days of the silos as a climbing gym, always seemed out of the realm of possibility. We began seriously exploring the feasibility in June 2016. Early surveys appeared to point to a system that would be far too cost prohibitive, inefficient or even ineffective. Eventually we found Comfort Works who approached the project with great interest and were willing to work with us on an engineering and design solution that would be compatible with our needs.
Over the following months we worked to flesh out the plan and it became clear that we could really do this. The up-front investment for installing geothermal in the silos is sizable but compared to the benefit and the efficiency of the system we feel justified in making the improvement. To the best of our knowledge this is the only climbing gym silo that will be fully climate controlled.
Of course there is still an element of experimentation here as a system like this has never been installed in a facility like this before!
Our hope is that with this improvement we can create more opportunity for climbers to experience a one-of-a-kind climbing experience - long climbs up to 90 feet in height, on rock-solid concrete walls - throughout the year.
We look forward to keeping you posted on the progress of the project and hearing your feedback.
